Founded by Otto Henze after he left Ocean City Reels in 1932, the Penn Fishing Tackle Company was established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Using one of the decade’s most popular products, Bakelite, Henze created the Mod F and two versions of the MOD K. One year later, the reels were renamed and the founder was ready for business by introducing the Sea Hawk, the Bayside and the Long Beach to the general public. Doubling the number of reels offered in following years came easy for the Penn Fishing Tackle Company as consumer demand grew. Taking inspiration from the surrounding Atlantic and Pacific Coast communities, Henze focused on “saltwater fishing” and earned the respect of the beach and bay fishermen who were interested in using his products. Developing their products further helped the company to become profitable at a time where the Economy was faltering. With its invention of the “Senator,” the company became a household name worldwide. In 2003, Penn was sold to Sea Striker Inc. of Morehead, North Carolina and Master Fishing Tackle of Carson, California and one year later, seventy years after being founded by Henze, Penn fishing reel models held over 1,400 IGFA World Records. Most Popular Penn Spinning Reels
The Penn Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Company was started in 1932 by a young German immigrant named Otto Henze. Leaving Ocean City Reels behind to pursue a business of his own, the thirty-something created the Mod F and the MOD K, the first two reels in a long line of products made by the company. When sales peak a short time later, the company expanded its distribution by serving both coasts.
Penn’s most famous reel, the Senator, was introduced in 1936 and soon gained the attention of legendary fishermen like Zane Grey, Ernest Hemingway and Michael Lerner. Decades later, the company has remained in the eye of the public by creating products that are long lasting and enjoyable.
Spinning, or fixed spool reels, gained popularity at the end of the 19th Century. Primarily used in North America, the lightweight reels made use of lures that were not easily cast by baitcasting reels. Containing a pick up or bail, a reel seat, a reel foot, a handle, a support arm, anti-reverse lever, skirted spool, fishing line and drag adjustment knob, the earliest models had some definite flaws in design. Although backlash-free, there was no rotating spool to keep the line in check. Tangled line caused many problems for anglers and made companies rethink the design.
In order to use a fixed spool reel, a person must open the bail, grasp the line with the forefinger, and use a backward snap of the rod followed by a forward cast while releasing the line with the forefinger at the same time. The bail also has to be manually repositioned after every use. Requiring a whole lot of practice, many anglers find this type of reel difficult to use.
Offering a wide selection of spinning reels, Penn takes pride in its ingenuity by keeping prices low and keeping standards high.
Penn Slammer has a sturdy full metal body and sideplate as well as an oversized HT-100 drag washer for smooth stopping power. Its triple-supported, oversized main shaft is unmatched and keeps things aligned and in good working order. The Techno-balanced rotor makes retrieving smooth despite high speeds while the five stainless steel ball bearings keep everything functioning to the height of its performance.
Penn Spinfisher is available in several different models and designs. Containing the Penn Leveline wrap system and a sealed drag knob, the Spinfisher is watertight, smooth and powerful. A fail-free bail spring makes casting and retrieving seem like child’s play while the oversized, ergonomic power knob on the 850SSm & 950SSm models makes the reel comfortable to palm.
Penn Sargus’ sturdy aluminum body and stainless steel main shaft provide long lasting use and less maintenance than other spinning reels. Gears remain aligned under heavy loads and the sealed drag knob makes it easier to hold onto heavier catches that require more strength and control. Available in seven different models and with gear ratios ranging from 5.3:1 to 6.2:1, the Sargus is designed to be fast and effective each time that it is used.
Penn Captiva is a series with over eight models under its name. Its lightweight graphite and eight Stainless steel ball bearings make it sturdy and the type of spinning reel that will remain functional for years to come. The long-cast aluminum spool and Techno-balanced rotor can allow an angler to crank at the highest of speeds while still giving smooth retrieves. Great for live bait fishing, the automatic engage feature of the liveliner on some models is an extra bonus.
Penn built a reputation that has outlived its founder. Smart, reliable and superior in its class, the Penn Spincasting Reel offers a lot of variety in different applications.
