Zebco, formerly known as the Zero Hour Bomb Company, and the Dennison-Johnson Reel Company introduced the first spincasting reels in 1949. Designed to reduce the backlash found in baitcasting reels and eliminate the line twist and snare associated with spinning reels, the new model uses a fixed spool but does not use the large wire bail and line roller. Mounted above the rod, the spool is protected by an external nose cone that encloses it. Spincast reels have narrow spools and level-wind mechanisms. Beginners love the ease that comes with casting this reel and in the 1950s and 1960s; it surged in popularity in North America. A button on the rear of the reel disengages the line pickup and the button allows the line to fly off the spool. The button is pressed again once the lure reaches the desired destination. Cranking the handle re-engages the line and allows for it to be reeled in smoothly.
